Immigration has not always been portrayed as a pleasing encounter and the different documentaries and stories on the subject reveal some terrifying scenarios that immigrants have had to endure or succumb to in an attempt to flee their home country. The film, Who is Dayani Cristal? (Silver) and the article, Crossing Mexico on La Bestia: The Central American Migrant Experience in the Documentary Films Which Way Home and Who Is Dayani Cristal? (Buiza), reveal some dismaying experiences that the migrants from Central America have had to endure as they pursue the American dream.
The film features an anonymous border crosser who was unfortunate to succumb to the harsh conditions of crossing the southern border separating Mexico and the U.S. To disclose the horrifying experiences that migrants from Central America often encounter, the film recreates the path that the anonymous migrant had followed before being meted with the untimely death. As per the film, some determined border crossers go as far as hanging on the roof of a moving train, sometimes falling off and even getting pulled under the train. The film also exposes the effort of forensic officers trying to identify the corpses of immigrants who perished in the desert. The family of the subject in the film was lucky to identify the body of their beloved, courtesy of the tattoo in his body with the name “Dayani Cristal.” The subject had opted to flee his home country, Honduras, in search of employment and funds to support his family and to cover the medical bills for his ailing child. The geopolitics and bureaucracies of fighting illegal immigrants and drug cartels across the southern border of the U.S. is the cause for all the tragedies facing the migrants, yet most of them genuinely seek to flee the economic burdens that have stricken their home countries.
The article by Buiza takes an in-depth analysis of the documentary, Who is Dayani Cristal?, alongside other bone-chilling migrants documentary, Which Way Home. The documentary, Which Way Home, features unaccompanied children migrants who have been separated from their parents and are determined to enter the U.S. illegally.
