Movie Review – Music Within
1 Give examples of the different types of disabilities shown in this movie.
The film Music Within features different types of physiological and psychological disabilities, including hearing disabilities (i.e., Pimentel), schizophrenia, and cerebral palsy (i.e., Honeyman).
2 What are some of the reactions towards individuals based on the type of disability they have (how are people with different disabilities treated)?
People whose disabilities are more manifest than others are usually treated differently (and more discriminatorily) than those with subtle differences. For example, people view those with Down’s Syndrome as incapable, while people with missing limb are not perceived this way. As could be seen in the movie, Art Honeyman who was suffering from cerebral palsy was viewed with pity and disregard as compared to Richard who has a hearing disability CITATION Liv07 \l 1033 (Sawalich). This is because the manifestation of Honeyman’s disease has the attached perception that he would be unable to function as a competent member of the society, regardless of whether he perseveres or not. This is even shown in the movie where Art was asked to leave the restaurant for he was considered ‘disgusting to other customers’.
3 Give an example of where an individual had a positive and negative reaction toward their own disability (how individual felt about disability in positive/negative way).
Although most individuals with disabilities perceive their situation negatively rather than positively, there are also a lot of success stories. One example of this would be the story of Richard Pimentel who viewed his hearing disability as a way to help others protect and advance their rights. Although he initially found his disability unfortunate, he was able to use it as a source of strength to be the beacon of change.
Another example of an individual who viewed his disability positively was Nick Vujicic. He is the founder of the website “Life Without Legs” and has been a beacon of hope all around the world, especially for people with disabilities. Although he was born without arms and legs, he was able to live normal life and inspire others CITATION Vujnd \l 1033 (Vujicic, Nick).
