A Father’s Wish
Ang Lee’s ‘Eat Drink Man Woman’ opens up a discussion on the essence of Chinese tradition through a remarkable show of family drama and culinary proficiency. Rather than depicting the classic traditional family that would have been a play to the western cliché and boldness, Ang Lee takes a more original approach to the description of the Taiwanese family. He explores the contradictory notion that might make others want to withhold tradition from the coming generation thus, allowing the viewer to acquire a more distinctive view on the connection between traditionalism and modernism in doing so. This essay sets to depict a lonely fathers’ wish, after the death of his wife and the change in attitude his daughters have developed. With the introduction of fast food joints and the decline of the Chinese culture, no one has care of the culinary arts. He is losing his sense of taste and tries explaining his frustrations to a good friend after a few drinks. Is that all there is, Eat, drink, man, woman, sex?
A delectable complex story of a perturbed Chinese family living in Taiwan in the early 1990s is what can best describe the film Eat, Drink, Man, Woman. The film is bound by the traditional Chinese meals prepared and cooked by Chef Tao Chu. The meals act as the connection for the family members in bringing out their successes and hardships to each other. This allows the family to get involved in the lives of each of their family members. As much as they all have their different struggles, the luscious Sunday meals of the Master Chef the Chu, nourish the family both in their good and bad times.
The significance of the meals comes to the light as the story develops. Each family member is keeping secrets from one another at the beginning of the film. They are doing so out of fear of reprisal from the others, jealously or simply out of respect. Chef Chu daughters are all living in his home. Out of respect and duty, it is expected of them to be available at the family dinner every Sunday. However, each of them has their own reasons for not wanting to avail themselves due to the fear of the dissection their father has on them and between themselves as siblings as well. Jia -Chen, who is the middle child, lets the viewer know her attitude about the family dinner when she tells her ex-boyfriend that she has to “get home for the Sunday dinner torture ritual”. Chef Chu prepares an emperor fit meal with a lot of love in every dish.
The three daughters are a perfect example of the results when modernization is confined in a space that is nothing short of tradition. With their unhappiness, the three sisters often compare their home to a prison and the Sunday dinner as torture. However, Chef Chu is determined to keep his home together and functioning. He takes over the household chores and even goes to the extent of doing his daughters laundry. Although they complain about him letting them sort their clothes on their own, this does not stop him. Notably, this scene portrays Chef Chu as history preserver.
