Movie Review Instructions:

Write a 700 to 800-word response that critically reflects on this week’s film and at least one reading from the week. Relate them to each other and specifically discuss the historical significance of the film. If there was no assignment last week, you may write about either this week’s or last week’s film and readings. Your response should demonstrate your understanding of the reading and the film. Do not simply summarize the film. Rather, discuss how that film has contributed to the aesthetic and/or technical innovations in film history. Also, consider how each film reflects and influences its socio-political context. You must use proper citations for all sources in your response. Below are some questions to serve as prompts for reflection. You do not have to address all of these questions in your response.
What are the central arguments made by the films and/or the texts and how do they relate to each other?
What social, cultural, political, or historical issues are brought into focus in the films and how?
What themes emerge from the films or texts and how do they relate to the historical context?
Describe the aesthetics of the film and discuss how they contribute to the development of film language.

Film: The Last Laugh
Reading: Genesis of UFA
Film history has evolved through different stages over time. The production processes have changed, but the films' function has not changed because they still communicate with the public about issues that affect the world. This essay analyzes the 1924 silent comedy movie The Last Laugh and the reading The Genesis of Ufa from the Kracauer Siegfried's From Caligari to Hitler: A psychological history of the German film.
Central Arguments
The film is a 1924 German silent comedy film that Carl Mayer wrote, and Friedrich Murnau directed it. A silent comedy film is an old form of film that represents a deep reality in the world. The protagonist goes very attached to his job of being a doorman in a hotel. Emil Jennings, the hotel doorman, becomes old, and the owner of the hotel thinks that Emil is old to continue his job and moves him to a less busy department (Full Cinema Channel). Emil is not happy. The older man represents the end of an era and the end of active productivity.
The reading explores the history of film in Germany. After World War I, there was a need for Germany to reclaim its lost glory economically and socially (Kracauer, 37). Any society cannot assume the impact of film on the audience. Germany decided to invest in it to spread propaganda and build a positive image globally due to its role in the first world war. Ufa had a great task to uplift the film industry's status in Germany after the production of low-quality films that ruined the country's image in the international market.
Social, Cultural, Political and Historical Issues
The film brings into focus several societal issues. The doorman's esteem depends on the respect he receives from the work he does. This shows that society classifies people according to the positions they hold. The doorman was devastated when he was demoted into working in the washrooms and did not want people to know (Full Cinema Channel). That is why he did not tell them. Society is very discriminative and would not respect a person who holds a lesser job working in the washrooms. Societal discrimination is a societal issue that is still persistent in society today.
A doorman is a lucky man. After his world scrambles down due to being demoted at work, he inherits a fortune from a Mexican. This shows that the cultural belief in luck and reward for good work from God. The doorman is very happy and decides to help...
