Immortality - An Egyptian Dream Video Review
Introduction
Immortality: An Egyptian Dream is a presentation by Jan Assman, Professor Emeritus of Egyptology, University of Heidelberg. Assman was the year’s guest speaker in the Foerster lecturer series: - a series dedicated to exploring the immortality of the soul. Foerster lectures on the immortality of the soul is a program at the University of California, Berkley, that creates an understanding of the continued existence of an immaterial soul or mind beyond the body’s physical death. The program was established in 1928 by Edith Zweybruck to honor the memory of her sister Agnes Foerster and her husband, Constantine Foerster. These lecturers are offered by a qualified person appointed for the person. Assman is a professor of Egyptology and a master of physiological and historical detail. He is one of the qualified professionals to deliver the lecture.
Summary
The presentation is one of the Foerster lectures on the soul's immortality. It talks about the Egyptian dream of immortality in different dimensions. At the beginning of the lecture, the professor identified three dimensions of immortality: time, space, and social dimensions. He then explains these dimensions in length and how they are related to the soul's immortality. According to the video, the Egyptians believed Pharaoh was a god on Earth who would fly up to heaven after his death to unite with his father, his sun. After the Old kingdom collapsed, the royal immortality concept became accessible for non-royal individuals but relied on the judgment of the dead. Immortality became a question of morals. Professor Assman explains the origins and the evolution of these concepts.
