Being able to watch critically and absorb the contents of a work is a vital skill for any researcher or writer. This assignment will offer a critically acclaimed film and require students to evaluate the contents. Students should consider the author's relationship to the material he or she has published. Major debates which relate to the articles should be identified and discussed within the review. The review must be 1-3 pages in length and correspond to an appropriate journal format suitable for an academic publication.
Objective:
The academic world requires that scholars be able to engage with the thinking of their colleagues in a respectful manner, but be able to offer critical analysis where it is necessary. Reviewing material is an excellent way to better understand it as well as to engage with broader topics.

Students will be an award-winning film by Spike Lee and must watch, analyze, and contextualize it in a 1-3 page review. An appropriate style sheet will be attached indicating the journal style which will be adhered to for this assignment, to closely mirror an actual review process. This work is not academic, but is creative, and students are encouraged to reflect on the film and what inspired it, what sources the director/writer has used, and how the film is engaging with this brutal history.

Racial Struggle in Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing American history is not complete if it does not include information about racial discrimination. Following the realization of 1964's Civil Rights, it became clear that racial tensions were far from over, and the emergence of the culture was in the 1970s and 80s is partly a testimony to this fact. Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing was released in 1989, and it is no surprise that the underlying theme is racial differences. The current paper reviews this film by connecting the author to the content and extrapolating the meaning of content within its context, i.e., the racial tensions of the era in the United States. Movie Summary While the film touches on different themes, the plot revolves around the Pizzeria in Brooklyn owned by Salvatore Fragione (Sal). The Pizzeria is Italian-owned but is located in a neighborhood where the majority are African American. A local man called Buggin'Out becomes upset because the Wall of Fame in the pizzeria exhibits only Italian actors and demands that it should be removed or Black actors should be added. According to Buggin'Out, since the pizzeria is operating in a black neighborhood, it should also celebrate black celebrities. However, Sal dismissed this claim by Buggin'Out, and the wall symbolizes racism and hates leading to tensions within the neighborhood. On a hot summer day, these tensions culminate into violence in which a fire razes down the pizzeria. A significant incident is when Buggin'Out and Radio Raheem confront Sal at his pizzeria. When the police arrive, Long tightens his grip on Raheem till he dies, leading to violence in which Sal's pizzeria is destroyed. Connections with Racial Struggle If anything, the song at the beginning of the film speaks a lot about the underlying forces that informed the film. The song is called Fight the Power by Public Enemy. As the song's NameNameName suggests, there is a power that should be fought. Speculatively, this power is causing and sustaining racial differences in the country.
