Instructions

The purpose of this assignment is to help students develop their critical engagement with cultural products and, as such, this review should be analytical/theoretical in nature. As with the first assignment, while students should engage the central argument and main point of the film, these responses are not meant to be merely summaries of the film. Rather they should: a) analyze the film through the lens of specific course readings assigned throughout the course (naming and citing which reading(s) you are referencing). Your review should examine how the film addresses/ relates/ troubles ideas such as those raised in our discussions throughout the course. b) engage key discussions, and/or assess what the particular film is attempting (and/or how it is doing so) in terms of key elements such as content, argumentation, cultural significance, and/or method. Writing the Film Review 1) Introduction- In the opening of your review, provide some basic information about the film. Consider the following questions: Who is the filmmaker? What does the film set out to do? How does it do so? Your introduction, which may be longer than one paragraph, should also begin to evaluate the film, and it should allude to the central concept of the review. A film review does not have to contain a thesis or main claim, but it should focus on a central analysis and assessment. 2) Description- In roughly a paragraph include a more detailed description of your particular cinematic experience watching the film. This may include your personal impression of what the film looks, feels, and sounds like. In other words, what stands out in your mind when you think about this particular film? 3) Analysis- How does the thematic content (such as history, race, beauty, gender, sexuality, class, or the ability) affect your experience and interpretation? Also, do the formal techniques work to forward the thematic content? Consider the way in which the footage is spliced together. Does it ‘flow’ from shot to shot? Does the organization of the film enhances or disrupt the narrative and plot? How does the content of the documentary fit into course themes? Is it important for understanding inequality? How does the film comment on, reinforce, or even critique social and political issues at the time it was released, including questions of inequality and the media?

Movie: Triangle of Sadness (2022)
Introduction
Triangle of Sadness is a satirical comedy film directed by Ruben Ostlund and produced in 2022. The film stars Carl (Harris Dickinson) and Yaya (Charlbi Dean), a couple whose main profession is modelling. The film is divided into three parts, with Carl and Yaya as the connecting pieces throughout the acts. The first part shows Carl, Yaya and other models in a modeling audition, but the focus falls on the male models. Later that evening, a fight ensues between Carl and Yaya in a hotel about who should pay the expensive bill since Yaya earns more than Carl. The second part takes place on a cruise where Carl and Yaya are invited to promote on social media. The cruise has wealthy people, including Dimitry (Zlatko Buric) from Russia, Winston (Oliver Ford Davies) and his wife Clementine (Amanda Walker) from Britain, Jarmo (Henrik Dorsen), Therese (Iris Berben) and an unnamed woman, a role played by Mia Benson). The third act is set on an Island where survivors from the yacht find themselves after being attacked by sea pirates.
The film's central argument is fame, class dynamics and wealth. Carl and Yaya care more about fame than their relationship. Yaya admits that she is in a relationship to gain a social media following and build on their career as social influencers. It is one factor that earned them the opportunity in the yacht. The wealthy people in the yacht have the best moments and control the rest of the classes lower than them in the hierarchy. They are treated well, given all they want and their demands respected regardless of how weird they may be. The low-class members, which comprises the crew workers, are secluded and follow the commands from the wealthy to get handouts and make them happy. Others, like the people of color working on the cruise, are not allowed to mingle with the guests.
Description
Triangle of Sadness is an educative, entertaining, and informative film that I enjoyed watching. The film made me reflect on contemporary social class issues in the workplace, learning institutions and sports. At school, most students group themselves socially based on their classes, with those from wealthy backgrounds often hanging around together, similar to those from the lower classes. In the sporting arena, golf is often for the rich, thus discriminating based on social class. However, the most outstanding take piece I got from the film was the discrimination of the people of color who were not allowed to mingle with the guests. Therefore, the film is interesting, educative and informative and resonates with the current society.
Analysis
The film successfully explores the themes of fame, wealth, class differences, racism and societal inequalities. It does this through scene development and organization, and narrative techniques. Ostlun...
