Introduction
This descriptive analysis of the movie "Wit" focuses on an issue related to the healthcare team in the film and its significance to the care of the patient as a reflection on how the movie relates to professional experiences. The film, which is set for American television, deals with the issue of death and dying in an eloquent, simple, and clear manner. Starring Emma Thompson as Dr. Vivian Bearing, an academic professor with a strong reputation for teaching metaphysical poetry at one of the American universities, the film exposes the relationships between patients and healthcare workers that need urgent attention to improve care. Other characters in the movie include Dr. Harvey Kelekian, a mean doctor with research advancement as his first priority and patient well-being second. In the hospital, Dr. Kelekian is working with Jason Posner, a brilliant young doctor who was a former student of Dr. Bearing. This paper identifies ways in which the movie portrays the relationships between the patient and their healthcare providers and how it reveals the nature of the healthcare providers. The role of the nursing profession will also be described as depicted in the film, especially the teaching and advocacy roles. With patient-centered care gaining increased adoption, this paper reflects on best practices for delivering care using this approach, as well as my suggestion on what nursing practice should resemble. The recent changes to the nursing profession have driven the potential of expanding healthcare approaches in clinical settings. The reflection also examines these areas that would improve nursing care and patient outcomes. Lastly, this paper reflects on the changes and identifies some of the shortcomings in the film already happening in modern local hospitals.
Movie Analysis: Wit
The movie takes place in a hospital setting from the time Dr. Bearing is informed about her severe case of metastatic ovarian cancer by Christopher Lloyd, playing Dr. Harvey Kelekian, to the closing shot where the patient has continued suffering from cancer and finally succumbed. At the beginning of the film, Dr. Bearing is told that she is suffering from stage IV of the disease, and Dr. Kelekian demands that she takes a full dose of experimental chemotherapy lasting for eight months. While the doctor warns his Bearing to remain strong during the treatment, the treatment is painful for her to bear, but he remains tolerant and impassive. Bearing is an emotionally homeless professor in 17th-century English poetry who confronts the reality of life-threatening cancer and poorly established medical care and research. The work of John Donne, "Death, be not proud…" features in the film as the doctor demands Bearing to sign a consent form to begin aggressive and debilitating chemotherapy that would later serve his research interest. Dr. Kelekian is joined by Bearing's former student, Jonathan M. Woodward, playing Jason Posner, a brilliant research fellow who seems to be insensitive to the patient's condition.
