This week, the class focused on Six Critical Questions for Brief Therapeutic Interventions by Catherine Dulmus and John Wordaski. Dulmus and Wordaski (2002) argue that the emergence of brief clinical services is influenced by the impact of political and economic forces on delivering mental, medical, and social services. To this end, Han notes that despite these developments, substance abuse problems in non-substance abuse practice areas receive little or no attention. This is despite that the social worker has a long history in the substance abuse field.
According to Dulmus and Wordaski, the design of the screening and brief intervention practice (SBIP) model allows social workers in substance abuse environments to incorporate practical screening questions in assessment protocols to allow for positive outcomes before providing a brief intervention. The model offers simplicity, practicality, and feasibility for inexperienced social workers. Han notes that while he has never encountered a substance abuse-related case, the model can be useful in Ninth hospital's field placement. Han supports this assertion by stating that substance abuse can be implicated in numerous medical conditions and may impact treatment and prognosis. However, Han thinks that the model's questions can be adjusted to fit the cultural context. Further, Han thinks that he can only find parts of the intervention framework useful due to limited time and resources.
I think Han agrees with Dalmus and Wordaski that SBIP is effective as a brief therapeutic intervention, especially in a hospital setting where there is the potential of having patients with underlying substance abuse problems.
