This paper discusses the characteristics of healthcare professionals working with children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and family support for their parents. It also informs families about the role of an autism specialist. The paper also recognizes that conducting oneself professionally entails demonstrating authentic compassion for children and families of children with ASD.
Three Characteristics of a Professional
According to Øzerk et al. (2021), professionals working with children with ASD should be assertive, responsible, and empathetic. Assertiveness enables professionals to ask for help, stand for their beliefs, and react to children's issues effectively. Accordingly, responsibility allows the professional to take action and demonstrate respect for children's insights. Empathy allows the professional to create close relationships and friendships with special needs children (Øzerk et al., 2021).
How Professionals Support Family Members
The professional can support family members of children with ASD by acknowledging their vulnerability to social, linguistic, social, and cognitive difficulties. The professional should encourage the family members to participate in social activities to reduce the stress associated with caring for the child. Connecting families to positive social support is also crucial in reducing stress and anxiety for parents of children struggling with ASD (Begum & Mamin, 2019).
