Sophia ultimately understands his desires for Ling due to his seductive nature and good looks. However, she notices that Ling has a pathetic view to life with his obsession with money and further his need to accomplish little pleasures. Her deep love of Ling despite his behavior shows the blindness caused by her love for his affection. Sophia eventually rejects Ling and tries to understand her inner self from a different perspective away from the locally accepted Chinese culture.
Sophia eventually realizes the level of deceit that she has been living with and rejects Ling. In her realization, Sophia acknowledges that she was attracted to Ling only because of his good looks. At this point, it can be said that it was lust and not love that she was feeling at the time. The realization that all this time she had wasted on a man who did not truly love her gave her some meaning. Ling was mostly there to satisfy his sexual desires hence did not actually love her. With the final rejection Sophia becomes aware of her desire to be with someone who loves and understands her. Her desire for more than just sexual satisfaction brought about regret on the wasted time. She starts to understand her sexuality and identity as a woman but cannot freely express it since she lives in fear of being judged.
There is a comparison between Ling and Weidi thus bringing the aspect of “westernization” in her relationships with the two men. There lays a contrast with how she behaves with the two with Ling showing a more open nature while Weidi is more conserved being a localized Chinese man. However, after her dilemma and new found realization on the shallowness of her desires as a woman, she gets back on course and decides to leave him. The realization of the concept on “westernized” men shows the unfound fascination that drove Sophia crazy through the idea that such men were better. However, their nature and behavior does not go with local Chinese behavior that is more conservative in nature. She however fails to find her desired bonds that would make her settle down with either men despite each being in contrast of the other.
Furthermore, Sophia internalized the emotional exchanges required between both men and women to show a sense of love. She realizes that she was willing to submit to Ling’s domination solely on the basis of his looks with her depiction, ...
