English 202D

Communication Projects #5 and #6, a Two-Part Assignment

100 Points Each

Assignment Overview and Purpose and Audience.

You are interning in the marketing department of the company justforyou.com that curates products, services, and experiences (films, concerts, vacations, events, political gatherings) for eighteen- to thirty-five- year-olds. Other companies such as Costco, Wal-Mart, Whole Foods, and Amazon contract with justforyou to create social media posts, emails, and even web pages using what is known as “personalized marketing,” which takes many forms, gathering together those products, services, and experiences for this demographic. Because you represent the age group of this company’s focus, the director of marketing, Rosa Palmore has assigned you to write an internal proposal about why justforyou should market some current consumer product, cultural practice, movement/organization, writer, musician, artist, scientist, sport, videogame, or TV/Netflix/Amazon/Hulu series. Here is what you need to think about right now: What is the specific “subject” you want to pitch to your director of marketing? Then build your working reference list and your outline around that subject. See Below.

Purpose and Audience

Your main purpose is to write an internal proposal to your director of marketing about your subject. She is your primary audience. However, she might show your report to others in the marketing department and to those in other departments of the company.

However, before you write the internal proposal, you will create a series of documents for me. I will be your audience for these documents.

Part One

  1. 1.      A Summary of One Article—Due, April 7, 2020, 11:59 pm.

  2. 2.      A Working Reference List of no less than Five Sources—Due, April 9, 2020, 11:59 PM

  3. An Outline of your Internal Proposal—Due: April 16, 2020, 11:59 pm.

The Summary

For the summary, you must find an article related to the assignment. The article could be about personalized marketing, marketing to the demographic of 18 to 35-year-olds, data collection and marketing, and/or the product, service, or experience you have decided to use for this assignment.  You must use a full-fledged article—not a blog post/not a weekly digest/not an email blast—from a reputable source—not just the first web article a google search provides. If other professors have assigned you to read articles that could work for this assignment, you can use one of those. The article must be at least five to ten pages, and the article must have an actual author or authors whom you can identify. I repeat: It must have an identifiable author—not just “editor of site.” If you cannot find the author’s/authors’ name(s), do not use the source for this assignment. If you have any questions about the article, please contact me about this.

Overview of Form and Content

You will write a 300-to 500-word memo, summarizing the article. Your purpose is to show me that you have done some basic research, working toward the internal proposal. The word count will depend on the length of the article, but usually summaries are about twenty percent of the original document.  You will format the summary as follows.

  • ·         Begin your memo with an opening paragraph titled Summary. Type the word Summary in bold. It should be left justified.  Hit enter once. Left-justify and single space the summary paragraph.  The summary should be no more than two to four sentences.

  • ·         In a few sentences (2-4), introduce the article, its content, and the findings of the research. A first sentence for this summary might look like this:

Von Stumm, Hell, & Chamorro-Premuzic (2011) claim that in addition to “higher cognitive ability” and hard work, intellectual curiosity can also determine academic achievement.

  • ·         After the summary, skip a line.

  • ·         Title the next section as Discussion and write the body of your summary.  Type the word Discussion in bold and left-justify this word. Hit enter once. Left-justify and single-space the discussion. Here, you should follow some plan of organization. See p. 37 of your textbook for methods of organization. You do not necessarily need to follow the organization of the article, although you could. For instance, is there a sense of chronology about the subject, cause/effect, comparison/contrast, classification/division?  Your job is to extrapolate the most important information from the article. If your discussion is more than one paragraph, single space within paragraphs and skip a line between paragraphs.

  • ·         After the discussion section, hit enter twice.

  • ·         Title the last section as Conclusion and conclude the memo. Write a two-four sentence conclusion.

Other Considerations

1. Memo Template: You will find an interoffice memo form that you can use through Canvas. See the Special Three-Week Module.

2. If your memo continues to the next page, I will show you how to set up a second page header for a memo

3. You will quote sparingly from the article itself.  You will list the article using APA style of documentation at the end of the memo under the heading References. If you quote directly from the article, you will need basic in-text citations. See your textbook, pp. 132-138, and you can go to this library link http://guides.libraries.psu.edu/apaquickguide

4. IMPORTANT: You ARE NOT arguing about the conclusions of the article; you ARE NOT recommending any course of action. You are summarizing an article, or reporting on its information.

Working Reference-APA Style of Documentation

After the summary, you will then create a Working Reference, a list of sources that you have found for this assignment up to this point. After this assignment, you can add and subtract sources to your list. You don’t have to use these exact sources for the actual writing assignment.

You will work toward the writing of the proposal by preparing a Working Reference list in the APA style of documentation. You should collect five to ten sources related to the subject you want your company to market and to personalized marketing.

Once you have decided upon your subject, you must spend time collecting sources you might use for your report. Those who do research regularly often begin with this step before they even spend time thoroughly reading such sources. They want to see how many sources exist and if they can even find sources about the subject before they get too invested in the subject matter.

However, they also don’t just collect sources to fill out a reference list. They read the title of the source, skim the introduction, sub-headings, first sentences of paragraphs, and the conclusion to decide if they want to place the source on the working reference list, because although they are not ready to read the source just yet, they also do not want to have a whole list of sources that will not have a return on their investment. Of course, a working reference list is just like a rough draft: Along the way of researching and writing, you may need to revise your references by subtracting from and adding to your list of sources, just as writers need to revise their actual writing.

You must have five sources to get the full ten points for this assignment. If you only have four, you will receive 8 points, three 6 points, etc. If you have more than five, I will give you extra points. Your sources must connect to your chosen scenario. I will also deduct points if I believe you’ve collected sources thoughtlessly.

Formatting of the Assignment

  1. 1.      Top Left—Your Name, Your Course and Section #, and Your email address—SINGLE SPACED.

  2. 2.      Center This Title—-Working References. Hit Enter Twice. Note: You are not typing the equal or greater than signs. I am just using these a placeholder to show where to list your subject.

See example of a reference page in your textbook, p.138

The Outline—Due April 16, 2020, 11:59 pm

Once you have done some research on your subject, you will submit an outline. Be sure to type your name, your course section, and your email at the top left hand of your outline.

As a heading, just list your subject and use the phrase Working Outline and center that.

EXAMPLE of a Title for the Outline:

Reformation Clothing Company—Working Outline

After the title, create a WORKING THESIS THAT YOU MIGHT POSSIBLY USE FOR THE INTERNAL PROPOSAL.

EXAMPLE of A WORKING THESIS

Justforyou should market the Reformation Clothing Company because of the design of the clothes and because of the emphasis on sustainability.

Note: You do not need to use bold when you are writing your outline. I am only using bold to emphasize certain instructions.

Next, you will start your outline. Use your reasons as your Roman Numerals:

  1. Reason #1

    1. Detail #1

    2. Detail #2

    3. Reason #2

      1. Detail #1

      2. Detail #2

      3. Detail #3

    4. Reason #3

      1. Detail #1

      2. Detail #2

      3. Detail #3

    5. Conclusion

Part Two

Internal Proposal Rough Draft Due April 28, 2020, 12:pm, meaning noon of that day. Final Version due, May 5, 2020, by 4:30 pm.

Overview of Form and Content

The internal proposal will take the form of a memo. Do your best to create a company logo for justforyou.com. The memo will be directed to Rosa Palmore, Director of Marketing. It will be from you. Fill in the date and the subject. As always memos should be single-spaced within paragraphs and a line skipped between paragraphs. This memo will most likely need to be more than one page.

Your proposal will have three parts. Use the headings: Introduction, Reasons to Market , Conclusion.

Introduction

Your introduction should be about four to six sentences. Introduce the task that you have been assigned.

Model for your introduction: Note: do not indent your first paragarph. I have only done so, to emphasize the form and content of the introduction. Use this introduction. In other words, I am giving you the answer. All you have to do is fill in the template.

“Three weeks ago, you asked me to research products, brands, experiences, and even artists that would appeal to the eighteen to thirty-five year old demographic . Based on my research, I think a new product that justforyou could market to this demographic is . We should market this product because

Reasons to Market

In this section, you would explain two to three reasons why justforyou should market your subject. Each reason should be a separate paragraph. Begin each paragraph, something like this:

Justforyou should market the Reformation clothing line to women 18-35 because its sexy, simple designs appeal to young women who are professionally and personally active.

Justforyou should also market the Reformation clothing line because it incorporates sustainability into its vision and throughout its product line.

And Note: This is not an example how you should space the document or these sentences in your internal proposal: I am have just indented these to set them off from the regular text of this document for emphatic purpose.

Conclusion

Here, restate your claim about your product and its value to justforyou.

Subject: Building a Mobile Personalized Marketing system using multidimensional data
A few weeks ago, we discussed products, brands, experiences, and even artists that would appeal to the eighteen to thirty-five year old demographic. You put me to the task to find the best way forward. After consultation and in-depth research, I am glad to provide feedback about the perfect product for Justforyou. Mobile, personalized marketing (MPM) is the most effective way we can promote our services to the customer.t-mobile are for helping customers make purchasing decisions without the feeling of intrusion. They tailor emails, videos, and text messages for each customer, depending on their presence and interests. We should market T-Mobile because they track each geographic location with a GPS; do useful fuzzy clustering and data analysis.
Justforyou should also market T-Mobile because Location tracks enable us to make accurate decisions about the preferences of individual users, which is essential in our case. T-Mobile uses GPS geographical tracking to send push notifications to nearby customers. They target all the customers in the location near the business, showing them that whatever they need is nearby. The most genius tracking T-Mobile utilizes applications that consumers opt into when searching for a product. The app makes it easy to observe and analyses the location behaviors and decisions of customers. We should consider personalized marketing for this and many other reasons. People of ages 18-35 depend on their phones for everything, including shopping, sports updates, travel tips, video games, and new movie trailers. Location information will benefit our products and services in terms of knowing what customers prefer.
We should market T-Mobile because Fuzzy clustering and data analysis can make Justforyou more competitive. Clustering is useful in identifying groups of potential users according to their attitudes, interests, and opinions about the service to improve the customer services to them. The market segment can go a long way and can help develop new unique product or service for the group. Clustering comes in two modules. The first module analyses the user activities in terms of location, time, date, weather, and month and provides adver...
