Accountability is a strongly desired trait in any relationship may it be personal or with an organization. This involves being responsible for the positive or negative outcome of your actions and decisions. It also helps manage expectations from people regarding the accomplishment of a task or project. Accountability is also an important characteristic that a leader must have. Leadership involves strategic planning of necessary steps to achieve a certain goal or vision, also guiding the people in taking the best optimal way of working towards it (“Importance of Accountability”, 2014). Leaders inspire, coach, and manage to make sure that the goals are met. Both accountability and leadership are evident in the army to provide direction and purpose to its people. In this paper, I will discuss the necessity of practicing accountability as an army leader.
As an army leader, it is important to know your priorities, aligning all the factors and decisions towards the accomplishment of what is deemed as most important (Doty & Doty, 2012). Being a part of the army, most especially being a leader, involves decision-making for the mission to be accomplished and to make sure that the team does the job smoothly. In this manner, the leader of the army is accountable not only to his mission, but also for the safety and actions of his team. Leadership involves a lot more than just management and giving directions, in most relationships, trust and faith are very important especially when working towards an objective. Because leaders do not just gain followers without basis, people believe in them and also make sure that this leader knows the direction where they are working towards. This will serve as a guideline as to which things should be given importance over the others. Without knowing the priorities, the regular soldier in the army may show confusion and even bring harm to himself or worse, add casualties by also inflicting injury or danger to his teammates. This is the same for the leader but with an even heavier responsibility, because he is also in-charge of the lives and actions of those in his team, also increasing the chances for mistakes or other issues which might bring harm and failure of their mission.
