Aluna – The Movie
In Aluna, the kogi astonishingly show their mastery of nature. While we, the younger brother, have mastered the world and even space, we still do not know how to live with nature. It is amazing how the Kogi remain calm even when they are close to industrial sites. They show an ability to forgive that normal people cannot. While we have plundered the earth for its resources, these people have spent all their lives learning to protect the ‘mother.’
When the whole world is waking up to the dangers of industrialization and globalization, the Kogi show us how far we have gone in forgetting where we came from. We are out of touch with nature because we do not see it as depletable. Even when we realize it, we still do not take time to rethink how we live. Changing how we live means sacrificing all we have built, all the wealth we have accumulated. It is impossible to give up all this so that we can get in touch with nature. Our attachment to the material world makes us dependent on it even though we need the ‘mother’ to build that world.
Perhaps it is time each individual started rethinking their way of life. We do not have to wait for our governments to act because we can act on our own. We can start using water sparingly, maintaining a small garden, and using less plastic. These are some things we can do to protect the ‘mother.’ Most importantly, we need to remember that we are not in charge; nature is.
Praying for Rain
When reading “Praying for rain,” one gets the feeling that human civilization is at a tipping point. For the past thirty years, environmentalists and climate change observers have warned of the repercussions if we do not develop solutions to global warming. The individuals featured in the article “Praying for rain” gives one hope for the future. Living in northwestern New Mexico would be hard for any outsider. But for the locals, they take everyday with ease. A harsh climate and neglect by the government have forced them to develop new ways of farming. Ironically, people living in dry areas are farmers, while those in wet areas prefer blue or white jobs. This is the first time I am learning about blue corn. As a consumer, I have never known any other type of corn except the one I buy in the supermarket. The people of northwestern New Mex...
