Based the studies described in Appendix 1, how convincing is the scientific evidence that the DASH diet decreases the risk of death from cardiovascular disease?
The different researches in the article explores scientific evidence that suggest the effectivity of the DASH diet in lowering blood pressure and creating positive physiologic change for patients. Cardiovascular diseases can be prominent on people who are vulnerable because of their food intake. According to the studies, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease has a rising trend in the past years. This trend can cause higher risk for various conditions such as heart disease and kidney failure. The studies infer that diet can create a major positive change in people so that they can combat high blood pressure and reduce risks associated with heart disease.
The first study focuses on creating a controlled diet for the subjects. This study utilized 459 adult subjects which creates a better statistical record for the study. It noted key information that determines cardiovascular condition which is the systolic and diastolic blood pressure. This information can provide essential information about the health of the heart of an individual. The research methodology followed a strict implementation of the diet and the participants were divided into different observation groups. For this research, scientific and statistical value was produced through the P value, which indicates a significant difference in the statistical standpoint. (Appel et al 1997) This research was able to observe that there was a negative P value for all participants that took a DASH diet. This proves that there is a decrease in blood pressure in the participants due to the intervention treatment of DASH diet.
In the second study, the researchers specifically conducted their research on Type 2 diabetic patients. This means that the scope and delimitation of the study is more compact than the first research. It utilized a randomized crossover clinical trial in 31 patients. Since this research have less participants, the statistics garnered from this study might not have enough traction for evidence.
