Water Cure
Water Cure is one of the health-fads discussed in module 7. The craze of wellness is deep-rooted in the mid-19th century. Many Americans were fascinated with a specific type of health activity. Water Cure led to the emergence of spa villages in the 1850s. By 1930, there were around 2,000 cold and hot-spring resorts in the United States of America (USA). In particular, Water Cure was a kind of therapy done in a tub, supervised by water specialists or doctors with some stopwatches. Based on specialists, water was believed to be the cure of many diseases and health conditions. Water Cure was a special therapy form that used water with regulated temperature to treat people with various illnesses.
Article VII, “Bathing, with Directions for Adapting Its Temperature to the State of the Patient,” depicts that Water Cure was a health-promoting practice that spread rapidly to different towns and villages. Dr. North of Saratoga was among the doctors who recommended a warm bath of about 99 degrees Fahrenheit. He said that it was important for individuals to remain in warm water for about 15 to 30 minutes (Fowler, 1849). People were encouraged to bathe in warm water during winters since it brought blood to the surface. Additionally, water doctors said cold water was to be used when it is preferable but not if it pains the patient. For example, cold water was applied when the patient’s skin was hot and the body was restless. However, when an individual felt exhausted or weak, one was advised to use a warm bath. A tepid bath was believed to soothe a person’s nerves, opened pores, and carried the disease away.
