Practice Dimension in Nursing
The nursing dimensions represent the many facets of nursing practice that contribute to the delivery of high-quality care that meets the patient's needs. Of these, the practice dimension focuses on the practical aspects of nursing, including clinical skills, decision-making, and the application of evidence-based practice. The three dimensions that make up the practice dimension of nursing care are practice, ethics, and resource utilization. These dimensions are critical in delivering quality care to patients, promoting positive health outcomes, and ensuring ethical conduct in the nursing profession. In this essay, I will describe a nursing experience that explores the three dimensions of nursing practice.
As a registered nurse, one experience that stands out is my time working in a palliative care unit. Palliative care is a specialized area of nursing that focuses on providing comfort and support to patients with terminal illnesses and their families. Ethics is a critical aspect of nursing practice, which involves making decisions that are morally sound and in line with the nursing code of ethics (De Panfilis et al., 2019). In the palliative care unit, ethical issues were commonplace, and one case that stands out is that of a cancer patient who wanted to skip treatment. The available treatment option for the patient was radiation therapy and the patient refused treatment after learning about the side effects associated with the treatment option such as nausea, pain, and fatigue. In addition, the patient did not want the clinicians to inform his family about the potential treatment. Some of the registered nurses felt that the family members should be informed about the situation given that the likelihood of success for the treatment was high. The ethical dilemma required me to apply ethical principles such as beneficence, non-maleficence, and respect for patient autonomy. Healthcare professionals must also respect patients' autonomy and provide them with the necessary information to make informed decisions about their care. Eventually, the patient decided to inform the family about the treatment and he proceeded with the treatment.
