Leadership Models and Styles
Nurse leaders adopt different leadership models and styles, and each has an impact on not only the nursing workforce but also on patients. According to Cummings et al. (2018), different leadership styles influence the nursing workforce, which can have a negative or positive effect on patient outcomes. This paper explores my personal model of leadership and compares it with other models. It also explores my personal worldview and how my personal leadership behaviors can inspire other nurses.
Personal Model of Leadership
My leadership model can be described as democratic. Democratic leadership refers to a leadership style where the leader engages the followers in open communication and allows them to participate in the decision-making process (Alharbi, 2017; Xu, 2017). I believe this is my leadership model because I always encourage others to provide feedback, share their ideas on doing things better, and communicate as much as needed. I like getting others involved in the decision-making process because I believe there is always someone in the team who has better ideas than mine. This does not always mean that everyone’s ideas and decisions are accepted. It only means that people are always involved in the process such that the final decision is accepted as the best decision for the team. Thus, I still have some level of control over the final decisions. According to Xu (2017), democratic leadership promotes commitment to organizational goals because followers feel like valued organization members. They are more likely to support the organization and its leaders. For democratic leadership to thrive, the leader must build a respectful relationship with followers.
Application of Leadership Model in Professional Setting
As a nurse, it is important to work and collaborate with other nurses in delivering quality patient care. More often, patients end up under the care of more than one nurse either during care transition or changes in shifts. Therefore, ensuring quality care throughout the nursing process is important. I would apply my leadership model to promote quality assurance in the delivery of care. According to Alharbi (2017), cases of medical errors are usually limited when democratic leadership is involved. This can be attributed to the fact that nurses have an opportunity to share their concerns through open communication and are involved in decision-making to identify gaps that contribute to medical errors and suggest solutions. Also, democratic leadership encourages individual responsibility (Xu, 2017), which is important in improving the quality of care.
Comparison of Leadership Models
The servant leadership model refers to a leadership approach whereby the leader’s primary goal is to serve his followers (Best, 2020). Thus, the servant-leader focuses on meeting the individual needs of followers to help them do their work better. Servant and democratic leadership are similar in that both models of leadership develop functional teams. However, in the servant leadership model, followers feel valued and empowered (Best, 2020), while in democratic leadership, followers feel valued and included (Xu, 2017)....
