Goodnough, Lawrence Tim, and Aryeh Shander. "Risks and complications of blood transfusions: optimizing outcomes for patients with chemotherapy-induced anemia." Johns Hopkins Advanced Studies in Medicine 8 (10) (2008): 357-362.
This article seeks to explain the complications of blood transfusion in patients that are suffering from complicated terminal illnesses. There are certain risks that are associated with blood transfusion according to the article. These risks have been categorized as either infectious or non-infectious risks. According to this paper, the authors suggest that allogenic blood transfusion does indeed have some risks associated with it and it would be better if institutions improved patient outcomes by using alternative treatments where possible. These institutions should also establish protocols that help in identifying appropriate transfusion candidates to avoid complications that may be caused by incompatible blood transfusions.
Some of the complications stated in this paper include:
Infectious risks in the form of incurable viruses.
Non-infectious immunologic complications.
Non-immunologic complications
Weakening of the immune system.
Transfusion-associated graft versus host disease.
Pulmonary edema and respiratory distress.
Organ failure or death caused by allergic reactions.
Hypotension and tachycardia.
Transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease is not a common complication but upon occurrence, the mortality is 80 to 90 per cent. This complication is brought about by a reaction between the donor’s lymphocytes and the recipient’s lymphoid tissue. In this case, T lymphocytes from the donor are usually identified as foreign bodies and are destroyed by the patient’s immune system. The main cause of transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease is the inability of the recipient’s immune system to reject the viable T cells that are present in the donor’s blood. The failure to reject these T cells by the recipient is mostly due to the recipient&...
