Nurses, like other healthcare professionals, play crucial roles in the overall performance of hospitals and health systems. In addition to providing care services to patients and vulnerable groups, nurses play leadership roles with the primary goal of creating a safe and secure working environment (Simpson, 2003). All these responsibilities require higher dedication and commitments on the part of professional nurses. However, the healthcare industry is characterized by specific challenges and threats, which have significant impacts on the performance of contemporary nurses. This paper identifies “long working hours” and “workplace hazards” as the main challenges affecting contemporary nurses and “technology changes” as the major threat to nurses.
A report released in 2012 on health affairs revealed that nurses who work back-to-back or extend shifts are at a higher risk of experiencing fatigue during working hours (Simpson, 2003).
