TTUS Public Art Collection - A Photo Essay

Essay Instructions:

Purpose - The purpose of this assignment is to use your own photographs and discussion to analyze the in-person viewing experience of a public artwork found on campus.

Skills - After doing this assignment you will be able to:

  • Translate what you see into clear, structured writing
  • Conduct a brief medium analysis of a selected work of art
  • Identify site-specificity in the TTU Public Art Collection
  • Analyze the unique experience of viewing a work of art in person

Knowledge - After doing this assignment you will understand:

  • How to make connections between a work of public art and its site (location)
  • How viewing an artwork in person is different than viewing a reproduction of that same artwork

Task - To complete this assignment you should:

1.    Look through the various platforms and/or social media sites listed here to get an overview of the TTU Public Art Collection. Choose from one or more of the following online locations:

  1. Facebook

2.    Select one work from the TTU Public Art Collection as the topic of your assignment. *Please note! You can NOT Rainstones by Rebecca Thompson.
3.    Go visit it in person! Take photographs of your visit to your artwork of choice. With your paper, you will include four (4) photographs to illustrate Tasks 4 - 7 below.
4.    What is it? Describe the artwork.
  • Include the artwork title, artist’s name, and date.
  • Describe the subject matter.
  • Photo #1: An overall view of your chosen public art work.


5.    Where is it? Discuss the artwork’s site-specificity.

  • Ø Describe the artwork’s location on campus.
  • Ø Identify the way(s) in which we can consider this work site-specific.
  • Ø Cite any sources used here; e.g. “According to the arTTrek App, ...”
  • Ø Photo #2: Includes reference to the artwork’s location on campus.

6.    What is its medium? Describe the artwork’s medium. .

  • Include any relevant vocabulary from the text.
  • Photo #3: An up-close detail illustrating the medium of the artwork


7.    In-person viewing experience. Describe it. .

  • What are two unique aspects of this work best seen in person?
  • Photo #4: Shows you alongside your selected work of art.

Criteria - Successful assignment submission will include:

  • A typed submission of approximately 200 - 300 words, double-spaced, 12-point font
    • Four photographs, see Tasks 4 - 7 above. All photographs must be taken by you.
    • Description of the artwork.
    • Identification and discussion of site-specificity.
    • Discussion of artwork’s medium.
    • Discussion of in-person viewing experience.
