Uncivil Behaviors and Social Control
Social control refers to any reaction by an observer or a bystander that communicated to a perpetrator of a norm transgression that their action is not acceptable socially. Social norms are among the strong determinants of behavior. Social norms guide behaviors in ambiguous situations and make the reactions of people more predictable and facilitate positive interactions among group members. Brauer, Markus, and Nadine researched to get a better understanding of the behavior characteristics that lead to social reactions in public settings (Brauer, Markus & Nadine, 490).
The primary hypothesis of the research was that in regards to uncivil behaviors, prescriptive norms are strongly linked to social controls than descriptive behaviors. Behaviors that violate social norms at a higher degree cause a greater disturbance to the social order and transgress social norms more (Brauer, Markus & Nadine, 491). Strong norm violations will have a greater negative effect on people than weak social norms. Also, the study was to determine the effect of culture on people’s reaction s to uncivil behaviors.
The research design involved giving the over a thousand participants with a questionnaire to fill in their official language of their countries. The participants were from eight different countries (USA, England, Germany, Belgium, France, Italy, Spain, and Portugal) (Brauer, Markus & Nadine, 493). The questionnaire contained a description of 46 uncivil behaviors.
There were three comparisons made in the results. First, the comparison between behaviors: prescriptive normality was strongly linked to social control demonstrating that the more deviant the behavior is, the more it generated social control than less deviant behavior (Brauer, Markus & Nadine, 494). Second, the comparison between countries: countries differed in the extent to which certain behaviors generated social control reactions. Al...
