Social Trends Encouraging Precarious Work
A major social trend encouraging work precarity is that some sectors are becoming increasingly non-standardized. Areas such as educational services, accommodation and food, and information, culture, and recreational services have significantly increased the number of part-time employees. Part-time work is a form of non-standardization of employment that results in an exhibition of precarious traits in the affected workplaces. In Canada, the precarity of work in the identified industries is worrying because these sectors are known to offer the lowest average hourly wages. Employees in these fields earn way below the Canadian average for all members of the part-time workforce. Therefore, making them further non-standardized makes one wonder how workers will survive. The social trend reveals that the condition may even worsen with time. 
Gender disparities in the labor market, leaving more women than men in non-standardized positions, form a social trend promoting precarious employment in society. Non-standardized work arrangements disproportionately affect women as they tend to assume more precarious positions, serve as temporary employees, have low opportunities for a pension compared to their male counterparts, have an absence of statutory benefits, and have income polarization to the lower end. One must acknowledge that women prefer precarious arrangements, such as part-time and temporary work types. They opt for these jobs due to the pressures of their daily roles within domestic setups.
