The Gender Pay Gap the U.S Soccer Teams
Women oppression has been a serious issue in the society. In trying to address this issue, two questions emerge; what are its origins? How can it be fought? These two questions are important when addressing the issue in this modern society where women are oppressed twice (both as women and workers). In this modern society it is believed that sexism is an issue of the past since more women have joined the workforce as compared to the past decades and they are getting more sexually liberated as well. However, there are other people who argue that this is not true, in the United States of America the pay gap between women and men is still wide and has evoked hot debates among the women in the workplace and policy makers. It is with no doubt that the past century witnessed huge strides in liberating women as most more started entering into education to pursue careers and fight for their rights such as divorce and abortion which have been achieved. However, it must be acknowledged that women are still exploited in the modern society and the forms of their exploitation keeps on changing with changes in the modern systems.
A good example that demonstrates how women are exploited is the gender pay gap between men and women in the US Soccer national team. This wage inequality in US Soccer National Teams makes one wonder if sexism exists in football. The oxford dictionary has defined sexism as “discrimination based on gender, and attitudes, stereotypes, and the cultural elements that promote this discrimination”. The objective of this paper is to explain the reasons behind the wage inequality in the US Soccer National teams.
The US Women’s National Soccer Team has filed a number of complaints with the Federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission over unequal pay with their male counterparts. In a complaint filed by five players, they complained that the US Soccer Federation was engaging in wage discrimination where the women team players received less pay as compared to their male counterparts even though there revenues were almost the same. The US Women’s National Soccer Team is notoriously the world’s best team having won four FIFA Women’s World Cup Championships, four Olympic medals and eight CONCACAF Gold Cups. Their male counterparts are not successful but their pay is higher. After the US Women’s National Soccer Team won their FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2019, the crowd celebrated by chanting “Equal Pay! Equal Pay!
Being more successful than their male counterparts, one is left to ask what justifies the gender pay gap. Why is it that the women’s team are paid less than the men’s team? Does it mean the women’s team generate less revenue? Can institutionalized sexism be blamed? These are some of the questions which can answer the larger questions “what are the origins of women oppression? And how can it be addressed?”
One cannot get a clear answer unless certain structures such as revenue generation, awards received from FIFA and the collective-bargaining agreements.
