Secular Miraculous Event
Miracles are arguably some of the most wondrous things in life. We might think of things that were once unthinkable becoming reality as a miracle, and we see this unfold on our everyday lives as we journey through the world. As Mary Chapin sings, “It’s a curious place between hope and desire. … We can transform our lives with the tap of the keys..”
The first secular miraculous event I can see coming in the near future is the realization of the ideas of human cloning. There are many science fiction works like novels, fan fiction stories, tv series, movies, and other media that depict human cloning in a futuristic setting. However, due to the implied possible negative impacts of cloning as depicted by science fiction, human cloning has been feared and many people are against it because of the ethicality of the act, not to mention any and all unintended consequences of the emerging technology. Despite opposition and fear, many scientists still endeavor to pursue technology on cloning, and they now do it in animals, and there are even technologies in cloning human body parts. All of these are done in the name of science and for the environment and diversity, as well as medical care.
For example, in medicine, scientists and physicians have been working towards growing some human body parts on animals. In 2016, scientists in Tokyo and Kyoto were able to grow a human ear on the back of a rat (Macrae). This was done in order to possibly address issues faced by medical doctors in reconstructing or restoring function on human body parts that were injured or damaged. However, despite the miraculous development like this, there are still way too many issues like animal rights, for one. Another example which sheds some light on the bossible benefit of cloning is the successful cloning of a rare Przewalski’s horse in 2020, which has become extinct in the wild, but due to the cloning, there is a relative improvement on the population of these horses now in 2022 (Brown).
