In the past and until today’s time, the world is only filled with two colors: black and white. These colors represent groups of people who have long been at odds with one another. Whites have always had more privilege than Blacks in this world. White people excel in various fields, are trusted, and are superior. Meanwhile, Blacks are perpetually oppressed. They are underachievers; some believe their group comprises delinquent individuals due to a lack of proper education. Furthermore, because these groups are constantly opposing each other due to their different circumstances, this paper seeks to answer the question: How does racism affect both the target and its adherents? Racism usually affects the victims, but this paper will look at how racism affects its adherents as well.
According to Bruce, racism threatens the victims and their believers (27). Blacks are always oppressed, the usual victims and the effects of racism on them are horrific. Blacks are victims of the stereotypes that have been attached to them. Furthermore, stereotypes have had an impact on the health of Black people. Their healthcare needs are not being met. Some Black people distrust healthcare because of poverty and racism in the system. There are also instances where Blacks have complained that they are not treated fairly. Because of their race, some healthcare professionals refuse to provide services. As a result, incidents like these make Blacks fearful of the healthcare system. In addition, the racism that Blacks face has an impact on their careers. In several cases, they face discrimination from their employers, colleagues, and even the institution where they work. Employers prefer Whites because they appear more respectable and believe Whites have more education. Employers also trust whites more than blacks because there is a stereotype that blacks are untrustworthy criminals. Blacks also suffer due to how their coworkers treat them. Because of their skin color, some colleagues will treat them unfairly and even bully them. People can also find racism in a company’s institutions and infrastructure. For example, a company may use a biometrics system, but Blacks are not detected due to their color and appearance. Finally, Blacks, both men and women are victims of abuse and violence.
