It is not possible to address the black history without mentioning the impacts that Marcus Garvey had on the African community not just in America but across the world. He is on icon of libertarianism for the oppressed and marginalized in the society (Leeuwen, 2017). Born in Jamaica, on the 17th of August 1887, in St. Ann’s Bay, Garvey was an entrepreneur, orator, publisher and a political leader who advocated for Black Nationalism along with Pan-Africanism. He was the last of the eleven children born to his father Marcus Garvey, Sr. and his mother Sarah Jane Richards (Biography.com, 2017). His father had been a stone mason while his mother was a domestic worker and sometimes used to farm. It is to this effect that Garvey, founded the Universal Negro Improvement Association along with the African Communities League (History.com, 2017).

Much of his life, Garvey was self-educated, as he would read the large collection of books his father kept in a small library. He advocated for Africans to be accorded the freedom to resettle in their mother land along with being given the right to be free citizens (Biography.com, 2017). At the time, most of the Africans were held across the States as slaves, taken from their mother land, Africa, and forced against their will to work in the fields and various industries as slaves, who did not have any rights ("Marcus Garvey 1887-1940", 2017).
Much of his started off as a young boy, who was firm, bold and determined as his father described him. His first skills involved printing as he was a printer’s apprentice at the age of 14. Later on, he travelled to Kingston Jamaica where he became involved in union activities (History.com, 2017). He later on worked as a newspaper editor, where he wrote about the exploitation of immigrants in the plantations. Later he travelled to London where he worked for the African Times and Orient Review. This was a paper that advocated for Pan-African Nationalism (Biography.com, 2017).
It is from such influences that Garvey, gained the much drive he needed to start the most successful Pan-African movement of his time. From the experiences, he had had, he moved back to Jamaica, where he then formed the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) in the year 1912. His mission was tied to helping the Africans across the globe gain equal rights as the rest of the whites who at the time acted as the first-class citizens and treated the Africans as second class citizens ("Marcus Garvey 1887-1940", 2017).
