Intergroup threats are noticed when an individual from a member of a particular group highlights that another group is in a position to trigger harm in their group. Physical harm is a real threat that leads to a concern over integrity of the in-groups understanding of the system and symbolic extortions. Response and cognitive towards threat appear negative especially when the outgroup leads to non-hostile conducts. Many studies has been carried out to examine the possibility of minimized intergroup threats. Research indicates that when members of different groups become aware that there are similar identity among them, intergroup threats are lowered and positive attitude towards others groups are developed.
A study was conducted to determine whether a common identity in groups had the ability to minimize intergroup threat. Two different studies were carried out where by every study constituted individuals from different cultural backgrounds. The first study was done to determine the relationship between groups during the existence of a common identity. Selection method was used where participant were asked to complete a questionnaire about their attitude towards racial judgement. Individuals in the group were of the same race.
The second experiment was required to determine whether inducing a categorized experiment between two groups could reduce intergroup threats. This study was required to answer the question; whether different structures of categorization can be contrary be fruitful in reducing intergroup threats.
