The government needs to implement secure IDs, stronger border control and visa enforcement, protective laws and offering assistance to the sender nations. Immigrants need to be issued with secure IDs. The move will facilitate witnesses or victims to crimes be able to report to the police without the fear that their immigration status will raise questions. Additionally, it is critical to have stronger border control (Alden, 2017). The U.S. needs to ensure that illegal immigrants like rug peddlers do not access cross over to the country. With stronger border controls and visa enforcement, illegal immigration would be minimized.
Further, the government needs to create a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants. The move will allow them to come forward and undertake the required government processes for eventual citizenship. At the same time, undocumented immigrants need protection in the workplace to ensure proper compensation in the case of work-related injuries (Gleeson, 2010). Also, offering assistance in the sending countries will ensure that people can find opportunities in their countries, hence they do not need to come to the U.S. for jobs.
However, there is a need to shift from temporary worker programs, and the focus on skill to get a visa. Through temporary worker programs. Temporary workers can reside and work in the U.S. until they switch with the next round. Instead of expanding on the already flawed temporary worker programs, the U.S. should shift to models that ensure authentic development while protecting the migrant workers from exploitation. Additionally, the measures put in place by President Trump to focus on skilled immigrant workers is wrong.
