The article “Equal opportunity to meaningful competitions: Disability rights and justice in sports” was authored by Mika LaVaque-Manty. The author argues that even in disability sports, there is exclusion that affects different people, yet the pursuit of equality and social justice will go a long way in removing the stigma in disability sporting activities and practices. The article further highlights the need to provide equal opportunities to all people to participate in sports and athletics regardless of whether they are able bodied or disabled.
One concept that I found useful is the anticaste principle, which can be applied in defense of the disabled participating in sports. The principle forbids legal and social practices from translating visible differences into a source of social disadvantage.
LaVaque-Mant (7) points out that “People are unequal when they are denied any such capability, whether as a result of intentional discrimination”. As such, his position that is that everyone should be allowed an opportunity to participate in sports and even if disability sports require more resources this is no reason to deny willing participants the chance to participate. This forms the basis for the writer’s idea that everyone should enjoy the capability to participate regardless of whether they utilize them or not. LaVaque-Mant target audience are the sporting event organizers, social justice activists and athlete/ sportspeople who are willing to expand opportunities even for those with limited capabilities.
