Globalization theories argue that democratic systems must be in place for countries to enjoy the many benefits of economic globalization. It is also argued to be the only system (democracy) that can protect the human rights of the citizens in a country. Democracy has also been described as the only way for people to feel empowered and secure. Yet we see more and more countries abandoning the idea of liberal democracy globally.
Considering and referencing when applicable the reading, visual, and hearing materials, the lectures on the 9th, 11th, and 16th (on the universality of human rights), and the lectures of the 18th, 23rd, and 25th (on the global implementation of democracy), and in no more than 400 words, please answer the following:

The question of whether democratic states are necessary to protect human rights globally is a complex and contentious one. On the one hand, proponents of democracy argue that democratic systems provide a framework that protects and promotes human rights. Democracy's emphasis on individual freedoms, civil liberties, and popular participation in decision-making can create a conducive environment for safeguarding human rights. As provided under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a cornerstone document in international human rights law, it also upholds the principles of democracy, stating that "the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government."
Nevertheless, Nayyar (2015) highlights the relationship between globalization and democracy, suggesting that democratic systems are crucial for countries to benefit from economic globalization. Democracy, emphasizing transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, provides a platform for the equitable distribution of resources and opportunities. It allows them to voice their concerns, hold governments accountable, and participate in decision-making.
