The Concepts and Theories in Fourth Entangled Symposium

Essay Instructions:

You have been selected to participate in our symposium on July 22nd with the poet Terrance Hayes and the psychoanalyst and poet Nuar Alsadir, who has been teaching the HouseFail studio with me and Maurizio Mattioli this semester. We will discuss the possible relationships between architecture, poetry and psychoanalysis, the creative process, and architectural structure and metaphor in Terrance’s work. The symposium will be from 1030AM-1230PM EST at this Zoom link. (Invitation also copied below)

In preparation, we would like to ask you to read as much of Terrance’s work as possible, particularly from his recent collection “American Sonnets for My Past and Future Assassin.” Several of these poems are online, including a few versions read by Terrance himself at the poetry foundation website and in a few YouTube videos. I would also encourage you to borrow or buy the actual book. Terrance is also a visual artist and you may be interested in his 2015 collection “How to Be Drawn” which explores visual art and poetry.

If you are interested in what our studio has been up to, I have attached the syllabus and the more-recently created “HouseFail Manifesto” which is a series of “rules” we created in studio to guide a design process that draws on the unconscious. It may also be helpful to read Nuar’s article on the creative process: https://lithub(dot)com/nuar-alsadi-the-craft-of-writing-empathy/

Please see attached two texts and two YouTube videos for the content of this time's symposium.

Fourth Entangled Symposium
1. What were the realities the symposium worked on?
Designers and creatives are inspired by the environments and thoughts and exploring how people from diverse disciplines view and understand the creative process. The symposium focuses on the thoughts of the poet Terrance Hayes and psychoanalyst Nuar Alsadir and Maurizio Mattioli, who teaches the House Fail studio, arguing for inward-looking to inspire the creative process. There is a multidisciplinary approach to creativity in the design of a private house, with the people working together. This makes the symposium unique as there are different frameworks of analysis. For the symposium, the participants look into ways that architecture, psychoanalysis, and poetry are linked together to understand new ways of thinking.
 2. What are the main concepts and theories that were mediating in the mobilization of those realities, from the perspective of the different disciplines that were represented in the symposium?
Integrating concepts from architecture, psychoanalysis, and poetry shows that the creative and design process requires inspiration from the inside. At the same time, working together helps to explore more about designing objects and the designed systems. Creating things in a multidisciplinary setting allows the people to incorporate diverse ideas to express concepts in architectural designs that would otherwise have fewer design elements. The poet, psychoanalyst, and teacher each have their unique voices and designs that shape their experiences. Terrance Hayes talks about his experiences, understanding of history, and personal feelings, which informs his writing process where he begins with an idea, and there are the following questions. In poetry, the voice and subject matter are part of the creative art process, focusing on the interior and then outside the expression....
