The main divisions of Hindu scriptures
Hinduism religion guides every step of a devout believer as a way of life, especially in influencing their behavior, attitude, and way of life. As such, the faith of a devout believer and their lifestyle are inseparable. Notably, Hindu scriptures are key guidance to the believer’s way of life and behavior. Unlike other religions, Hinduism does not rely on any precise scripture in presenting metaphysical truths, philosophy, and beliefs. Smriti (remembered), Nyaya (logic), and Shruti (heard) are the major classifications of Hindu scriptures. According to Hindus, Shruti was something heard from God, which makes it more authoritative. Vedas are the oldest and most sacred scriptures that originate in 1500 B.C. Hindus recognize them as timeless. The term Veda means knowledge that developed from Lord Krishna as the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
Smriti is the term that describes Hindu scriptures, except Vedanta – Sutras that are classified as Nyaya. The related scriptures consist of three different types: Itihaasa as epics that make known divine-human attributes. According to Barman, Mahabharata and Ramayana are the major epics of Smriti scriptures as stories of two incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Rama, and Krishna (3660). Each story, PuraaNa-s, emphasizes morals regarding a Hindu deity fighting to uphold the morals. Hindu scriptures have eighteen Purana-S and eighteen sub-Puranas as the main rules of rites, rituals, and Gods’ worship. Just as aforementioned, Vedas are the oldest and sacred scriptures of the Hindus. Atharva, Sama, Rig, and Yajur are the main four Vedas consisting of prayers to divinities of nature, such as wind, rain, fire, and sun. Vedas include matrimony prayers, domestic rites, magic, formulas, and progeny (children). The prayers are in metrical verse of three to four lines.
