Learned helplessness is a common condition that occurs to anyone who has lived while experiencing suffering and pain. Specifically, this condition happens because the individual is made to believe that the pain or suffering that they are experiencing is ‘normal’, thereby causing them to endure them rather than find opportunities to grow or escape. In the podcast entitled You are Not So Smart – Learned Helplessness, one of the most interesting demonstrations of this phenomenon is the relation between a person’s ‘attributional style’ with his resilience in both personal life and career. Particularly, the speakers said that those who have a more pessimistic outlook in life tend to think that any failures at work (e.g., leading a team) are due to their own shortcomings in life. On the other hand, those who have a more optimistic view tends to overcome these shortcomings by viewing failure as a natural phenomenon and using them as opportunities for growth.
In relation to the readings provided, it could be seen that learned helplessness is related to different aspects of an individual’s psychology. First, it could be seen that individuals use learned helplessness in the form of ‘regression’ in order to avoid the amount of stress that is inherent in change or development. Regression, as defined in the reading, is the act of “retreating back to previously surmounted developmental levels” in order to go back to one’s comfort zone despite knowing that changes could resolve his suffering.
