Write an essay exploring the role of differentiation and integration in the adolescent brain. In your response, include the following terms: myelogenesis, Hebb Rule, LTP, and pruning. As part of your conclusion, connect these brain changes to a person's need for congruence.
The process of differentiation allows progression and the emergence of distinctive features, while integration of the brain is important as the separate areas get linked to each other depending on the synaptic connections. Differentiation and the integrated linkages are important for proper functioning and changes of the adolescent brain. There are changes in the brain’s form and function change as the brain has plasticity and this decreases with age. The processes that affect the adolescent brain include myelogenesis, Hebb Rule, LTP, and pruning
The adolescent brain is not fully developed and undergoes developmental changes including maturation of the neural systems, but also the loss of some of the synaptic connections in various neural regions. Myelogenesis is the development of the brain and the spinal cord as well as the myelin sheath, which in turn affects the functioning of the nerve fiber. The Hebb Rule of learning focuses on synaptic plasticity where neuronal activities affect the linkages between neurons. Long-term potentiation (LTP), relates to the process where there is strengthening of the synaptic connections between the neurons based on the patterns of activity. Neural pruning refines the brain effort and influences the brain efficiency, where the synaptic connections tend to deteriorate or disappear when not used.
