Voting Rational or Irrational
A large number of Americans have no idea about how their emotions and feelings can shape the political system of the country. I will begin the discussion with a simple and straightforward model (the rational choice model). According to this model, citizens have a right to decide whether to vote or not and it is all dependent on their personal interests and choices (Hindmoor & Taylor 222). For example, a person may decide to vote if, in his views, the advantages of voting are more than the costs. In contrast, if an individual finds the costs to be greater than the advantages, he may never step out of his house to cast the vote. Before a person decides of voting, he should always estimate the expected advantages. For this purpose, he can determine how much time is needed to vote and what the potential gains of voting are. If it takes him a lot of time to reach the polling station and to cast the vote, the person should not go for it. Let us assume that a plurality election has nearly 10,000 electors and two candidates. If a person sees that 7,000 electors have cast their vote or are about to cast it, then he can easily determine whether it is good to cast his own vote or not.
