1. Deppman characterizes Su Tong’s style as a controversial one. Su presents the brutal realities of provincial China to make it a world of drug addiction, poverty and prostitution. The novel “wives and Concubines” later translated to “Raise the Red Lantern" presents the life of Lotus, a young woman who chooses to become a concubine of wealth man after her father commits suicide. Cruel treatment, despair and loneliness makes Lotus establish her descent into insanity both a refuge and a weapon.
2. Su Tong uses the allegory sort of symbolism. Throughout the novel, the author created the bizarre of folk custom in feudal china at perceptual level as well as national allegory at rational level to show the inborn hostility as well as furious struggle between women in a large traditional family with wives and concubines who from the crowd and to reflect on conventional culture and attention to humanity.
