Why Should English Exist?
There are numerous reasons why English should exist, taking into considerations that a huge number of people across the world use it as a common language, especially when they visit countries where English is not their first or national language. This claim is supported by the fact that when a person travels to different countries where English is not the native language, such as France, Germany, Spain, and so on, most people tend to use English as the common language of communication (Robby). Robby supplements that he has travelled to countries such as Portugal, Greece, and Spain, where the claims he makes are largely supported that English is used in restaurants and retail centers when employees communicate with visitors and foreigners. Therefore, this is one of the fundamental reasons why English should exist.
English has a cultural legacy that dates back to hundreds of years ago and it began to spread when explorers started to move across the world to discover new territories. Not only did these explorers enable the English language to be learned by the native communities in foreign lands, evidence indicates that the English language had a linguistic influence that enhanced communication across diverse cultures (Crystal 86). The same experience continues up to this day where English is increasingly being used as a means of connecting with foreigners, irrespective of their country of origin. For instance, when a person from Germany travels to Spain and he does not understand the Spanish language, there is a high likelihood that he will attempt to use the English language, even when he is not fluent, to communicate with a Spanish national. This illustrates the significance of the English language and the reason why it is the most dominant international language.
Basically, it can be described that English has become a dominant language across the world due to the fact most countries use it as a means of communication among the locals and foreigners. Not only is English flexible, but evidence suggests that people from different nationalities are able to use this language irrespective of their social status. Urszula Clark conducted a study that showed that English is increasingly being used by people as a means of identifying themselves with certain places (Carmen & Laura).
