The united states boast of having the best economy and the ‘land of opportunity.’ However, these opportunities are not equal. Some people have been brought up in appalling conditions and their visions for a better life are different from those who have had it all. Our cultural, social, economic, geographical, political, environmental factors shape our destiny and overcoming the odds is almost impossible. Our opportunities in life are hinged on unavoidable circumstances that we are born in and they go a long way into shaping our future. Levine authors a chilling account of her life as a child to a whoring mother and the struggles she had to endure before also becoming a whore. This article draws evidence from her story to show how opportunity comes in different measures for every human. Opportunities in our lives are a product of our family backgrounds and they go a long way in shaping our future.
In the chilling story of Levine describing how she had to live with a whoring mother. It dawns to the reader that we have all been brought up differently. Our stories are different but for some people have had terrible lives than us. For Levine, as she describes how her life today is a product of her mother’s mistakes and ‘lessons’. “My mother became a whore because she had a daughter and a dead-beat husband. She was a single mother in a dead, brick city in northern New Jersey. Levine, a young girl, she was exposed to a hard life by her mother.” Such a family setting sets the stage for a psychologically troubled childhood which has lasting effects into her adulthood. As she narrates the story, she has already become a whore and she takes pride in her ‘job’ knowing that her mother is watching over her.
Her mother never cared to educate her on many things especially regarding pursuing a brighter future, rather she taught her to respect the sex industry. She regrets, ‘my mother always told me to respect the sex industry.’ Imagine a young girl whose mother is indoctrinating sexual immorality into her. No wonder she grew up to be whore and she loved doing it because she was taught. Her mother openly told her that is how she covered her bills. She recalls how her mother made her money, “she made with her body, with her hands, her mouth, her pussy.” She had to grow respecting that industry that has been widely demonized the world over. She was taught it could be her lifeline and it came to pass.
Her parents were also very abusive. She grew up witnessing her father beating her mother. It got so bad that her mother called police one day and Tony, the dead-beat husband was taken away. They attempted to restructure and reconstruct their lives and live like a normal family but they were deeply rooted in a vicious circle of prostitution and drug abuse.
