Vermeer in Bosnia Reading Response
In the reading, Vermeer In Bosnia, the author takes us through the significance of Jan Vermeer’s artwork. In what appears to be a creative narration of beginning the story, the author takes us through the conversation that they had with Antonio Cassese, an Italian Jurist at The Hague courts. Something that appears to be unique is the way in which the author has presented a new perspective of Vermeer paintings. Previously, I had thought that the paintings were all about depicting the war situation that had taken place in Europe at the time. However, as you continue reading the text, you later realize that the artwork by Jan Vermeer was all about the restoration of peace. It is quite interesting to know that the artist made this work with the intention of perhaps informing the people about the peace that was already existing in some areas within Europe. In fact, the author notes that the artist was born 16 years before the end of the war that had existed for about 30 years. Sometimes when I personally even look at any piece of art, I take less time to reflect about it. I view art as a reminder of past history and the events that took place long before I came into existence. However, in this text, the author notes that the artwork by Vermeer gives them a feeling of peace. Relating what you see in the museum with what is happening in the present world where people are looking for justice, one can note that indeed getting justice in this world is difficult. There are also some questions that can linger in your head as you are watching these artworks. Vermeer’s paintings are like a movie. When you are looking at them, you cannot avoid wondering what the artist wanted to say. It is aby asking yourself these critical questions that indeed you get to understand any piece of art. Apart from relying on the available information about any piece of art, it is good to carry out an evaluation to understand how the artwork communicates to you personally and how it relates to current issues affecting the society.
