Morgan’s article is formal and focuses on the conventional rules and norms on speech communities, when compared to the video comments where the language is more informal and contains Southern sayings. The comments are shortened sometimes using slang and contradictions and abbreviations. In the YouTube comment sections people mainly make their opinions clear and not have to support them, which reflects their observations, beliefs, attitudes and agreement/ disagreement with certain viewpoints and representations. The Morgan article quotes other authors, writers and researchers to clarify, and explain the viewpoint, and this provides context on what Morgan means by speech communities. Morgan’s article is targeted at anyone interested in speech communities, and using standardized writing and language is important to communicate effectively. YouTube is a more open forum where people can post comment anonymously and since the video focuses on what is more commonly among southern women and there are idioms and word choices that are unique to the US south.
