It is inhumane for a human being to treat another individual as if they were an animal. Persons with mental issues should not be treated as if they are a burden to society. It is not in their liking to be suffering from disabilities. Hence, people should not view them as unsolicited persons in society.
b) Do you think people with disabilities are still institutionalized and/ or segregated in the United States today? Explain your answer.
Yes, people with disabilities are still institutionalized and/or segregated in the United States today. This is because corporate organizations view this as big businesses where they can easily chase for money. They are inconsiderate of the rights of these individuals. Persons with disabilities have a right to see someone they want when they please as well as a right to come and go if they wish. But, corporate organizations do not consider this to be important. Hence, they treat them however they please, not minding they are hurting them in a way.
2. Pick one of the families from the film Unforgotten: 25 Years After Willowbrook and discuss that family’s experiences with having placed their loved one in a hospital and after Willowbrook. Do you think their experience would be different today? Why or why not?
Most families placed their children in Willowbrook as many doctors and professionals recommended it as an ideal center for those who were retarded. Thus, many parents chose to take their disabled children there. However, little did they know what their children were going through as they were not allowed inside. Lucky for Judy Moore, she had the opportunity to go home over the weekends with her parents. However, some children had to spend all their weekdays, weekends, as well as holidays in the institution.
