The Pitfalls of “Niceness”
Perhaps, some of the most important things that a kid could learn from their parents are the values which would define them as they grow up in life. These values would not only serve the bastions for their attitude towards others, but also as the model for an individual’s personality as well as his core perception of reality. However, there are times when even the foundations of your own personality could be shaken as you face the real world. Instances where you would inevitably doubt yourself and the things that you believe in, as they fail to reap the expected results that you expect. In my case, this failure of expectation would be the result from my naïve idea of “The Golden Rule”, earlier in my life.
When I was a kid, my parents would never forget to remind me that in order to be treated with respect by other people, I should start by treating them with respect first. This value of the golden rule, simply states that “whatever you throw to others, would be thrown back at you”. Because of this I spent a lot of my conscious effort when I was a child in making friends with others and treating them politely, since I know what I would feel if I do otherwise.
