A response paper should express what you are thinking about. It should reflect your background, values, and attitudes in response to the work, not what the instructor thinks about it. Focus on an in important aspect such as main character, setting, or theme and discuss your reaction to it. (Sample on Page 1135-1137)

The Farmer and the Stork
The farmer and the Stork is one of the Aesop's fables. It is interesting to note that the farmer planted his cornfield and set up net traps, especially for anyone coming for his seeds. The aspect of the fable that got my attention was the stork in the company of cranes.
To begin with, the cranes are gay. The stork could have figured out that their behavior was not the best. The party of cranes ends up in the farmers' field alongside the stork. All the birds are trapped in the nets. The stork legs get broken in the process. When the farmer came along the stork was begging out for his freedom stating that he is different from the cranes even from the feathery appearance. The conversation between the stork and the farmer forms the main theme of the fable.
The Stork tries to explain to the farmer his nature. It is hard to believe how gullible the stork, who claims to be pleasing his father and his mother gets carried away by the party of cranes. They had all agreed to go to the newly planted field without the "good" stork disputing the idea. The conversation brings out the theme of judging according to the company one keeps. Storks and cranes are different kinds of birds. Their character and liking also differ. However, the fact that the cranes and the stork were eating the farmers' seed makes both types of birds guilty. The farmer is justified in the kind of punishment he gives collectively. The stork cannot be afforded a second chance to prove his character.
The fable setting in the western part of the world depicts the societal expectations of an individual. One is judged according to the kind of behavior portrayed at a particular time. You cannot be caught stealing or taking drugs and blame peer pressure or other problems. One is only given a single chance in life. The chance has to be properly utilized.
