Can Humans and Aliens Coexist?
Part I: Providing Context
On 10 December 2009, Avatar, an epic science fiction film produced, directed, written, and co-edited by James Cameron, was released. Now the second-highest-grossing film with a worldwide gross of $2.79 billion, Avatar continues to captivate millions of viewers with its extraterrestrial battles, quaint scenery, and calm, blue-skinned aliens. The premise of Avatar is that humans can access the world of these 10-foot, blue-skinned aliens, and control them by manipulating their speech and movements. By doing so, the Avatars get to experience life – every sensation, emotion, feeling – as if consciousness were transferred from the human to the Avatar.
But, is the Avatar concept possible in modern society, or are we decades away from making the sophisticated interaction seen in the film possible? If humans knew that there were aliens in the universe, how would they react, and would they be able to coexist with the aliens? The Zoo Hypothesis, which was first proposed in the mid-1070s, describes the earth as a planet that is under alien observation (Ball, 349). Scientists hypothesize that the non-communication between aliens and humans is because the aliens are deliberately avoiding interaction. Instead, they are watching us in the same way we observe captive animals. I am delving deeper into this subject because I want to find out what would happen if humans and aliens existed in the same environment.
Part II. Describing Particulars
The general audience for my inquiry consists of fellow and future students, as well as the general public. When writing, I will need to keep this audience in mind because there is a possibilit...
