Telling the Story Lubbock Using Historical Artefacts
Personal and Rhetorical Goals
As a resident of Lubbock, Texas, the history of the city has intrigued me since it embodies the history of the entire American nation. Therefore, there is a need to explore what artifacts can be salvaged or exhibited to tell the story of Lubbock better than what is currently available. For this reason, the multimodal project will focus on exploring the Museum of Texas University (TTU) and its historical collections and exhibitions and attempt to create an account of Lubbock before the arrival of the Europeans. My personal goals in the project include helping preserve the unique history of Lubbock and developing a narrative that tells the story better than other narratives do. The primary questions are 1) What do the available artifacts achieve in telling the tale of Lubbock? 2) What are the main gaps in the current artifacts and exhibitions, and what critical pieces are missing? 3) What pieces can be used to fill the current gaps and that can be added to the TTU collection?
The main rhetorical goal of the multimodal project is to create a piece artifact that offers a unified view of Lubbock and connects it to that of the entire country. Another rhetorical goal is to combine historical pieces of the city into one larger exhibition, which should provide a better view of the city and its importance to American history. The exhibition is expected to be acceptable by the TTU and possibly other museums with historical displays.
Material, Technology, Methods, and Rhetoric
Several choices have been made regarding the materials, methods, technology, and rhetoric. In terms of materials, the TTU Museum databases and websites, as well as exhibitions, will be used as the sources of information regarding artifacts. The TTU museum has several collections and research categorized into multiple classes, one of which is history. This class contains a broad array of objects that represent the social, political, technological, economic, and governmental fabric of West Texas South (Museum of Texas West University). However, these materials will only help understand what is available and what is needed, which means that gaps will be filled using materials from elsewhere. Therefore, such artifacts as pieces of art, speeches and statements from prominent historical figures, pictures or photos of places and people, and any other archeological findings will be used.
