Shyness - The Yellow Wallpaper
Self-expression amidst glorified independence is difficult to the introverted individuals whose personalities leave them to the mercies of staying in self-sacrificing spheres. It is a cost that one has to take on similar to Gillman's "The Yellow Wallpaper," story where an introverted woman battles shyness, anxiety, and postpartum depression. Just like the woman in the Yellow Wallpaper, shyness is my battle. The fear of being publicly scoffed, looked down by others and living in a differently social-customed community makes me shun away wherever am in a multitude. Writing down my thoughts when shyness creeps in has become my escape path. Would writing be my “yellow wallpaper”?
The Gillman’s story illustrates different occasions where the narrator is shy and unable to explain herself to John, her husband. Instead, she develops a fascinating relationship with the yellow wallpaper in their ancestral hall upstairs room. According to the story, John had, moved her to the room for summer so that she could rest and recover from her ailment, "he said we came here solely on my account, that I was to have perfect rest and breath all air I could" (648). She describes the place as an atrocious nursery that makes her feel nervous every day. She is shy to address her feelings since she believes John thinks she is happy but not, "John does not know how much I suffer, he knows there is no reason to suffer, and that satisfies him" (650). She further narrates how she is willing to work to improve her mental health, but her physician, John, opposes (648). Sarcastically he advises her to prevent her mind from any other wandering thought that would cause more ailment. John is not aware that the environmental circumstances he is enforcing on her are driving the helpless, shy narrator mentally insane with every confession making her feel bad (648).
Further, the narrator explains how she was unable to have an effective conversation with people, but she discovered the yellow paper, which she asserted that it had vibrant patterns perpetrating every artistic sin. According to her, she would perceive a great woman behind the paper who would occasionally crawl around fast with the crawling shaking the place (654). She further narrated that the paper had a peculiar smell. The narrator's growing obsession with the wallpaper demonstrates how she is disengaging from reality. This is evident when the story ends, where the narrator gets herself creeping smoothly on the floor, "but here I can creep smoothly on the floor and my shoulder fits in that long smooch around the wall" (656). Finally, when John finds out that his wife is not in her mind, he collapses, and the woman keeps crawling over him wondering why John fainted (656).
I have life experiences of shyness on different occasions that have shaped how I respond to such similar cases. For instance, every time I meet new people, I feel nervous and, in most cases, unable to make conversations with them. I am an entrepreneur and am expected to meet with new customers and business people from different cultures and races anytime David (2019)
