Being the one behind the wheel is a very significant milestone for teenagers. Driving symbolizes the transition from being a child to becoming an adult. The current age for driving starts at 16 years old in most states. However, there has been an ongoing discussion regarding the right age that someone can have a license. Raising the legal driving age from 16 years old to 18 years old will promote physiological maturity, safety, and environmental wellbeing.
At 16 years of age, the maturity level of both males and females is not yet at its fully-developed state. During this stage, there are still changes that are occurring because of adolescence, and giving a huge responsibility to teenagers that are this young is not a good idea. There may be instances of emotional instability and impulsiveness that may result in consequences that they have not thought of due to the lack of deep self-reflection at this stage (Icenogle, Grace, et al.).
