From the style, we can say that Donne succeeds in using symbolism to pass his message. First, the Flea, the small parasitic creature, is used symbolically to imply the sexual act based on the narrator's remarks at the start. The Flea is used as a symbol to demonstrate the desire of the speaker to be intimate. For example, he says that "How little that which thou deniest me is; It sucked me first, and now sucks thee, And in this flea, our two bloods mingled be." The Flea represents the intimacy between the speaker and the lover, and it sucked their two bloods. Another instance where this type of symbolism is used is in lines twelve and thirteen, "This flea is you and I, and this, our marriage bed, and marriage temple is." This demonstrates that the two people were in love and led to the temple to consummate their marriage. Therefore, the Flea is an unexpected symbol to represent intimacy. Still, Donne successfully uses it to explain what intimacy is and how people ought to relate.

The rivalry between the two people rose as they battled to control the England throne. In one letter, "The Queen of Scots, who is likewise very young…have [not] of themselves imagined and deliberated an enterprise so unjust, unreasonable, and perilous." This was Elizabeth's diplomatic approach to safeguard her claim to the throne (Hunter1).
