Shen Congwen on Lyrical Traditional
Shen Congwen has done a great job in presenting the tradition of the chines in his works. To begin with, he served in the army and did not get a substantial education. As a result, he relocated to Beijing, whereby he started focusing on literary work. His experience and knowledge of the chines culture made it easy for him to talk about their traditions. Therefore, he uses themes and character descriptions to show the lyrical tradition with regard to Xiaoxiao.
Shen theme creates the theme of a wedding in the chines culture as a reflection of their tradition. He opens Xiaoxiao by discussing the scene of a weeding belonging to an orphaned girl. According to his description, it is clear that most of the weddings happen in the twelfth month. Therefore, he describes a girl who is circulated by the emotional trauma of leaving her parents to go and live with strangers for the rest of her life. The main purpose of the wedding is not showing a celebration, but rather, Shen was passing across the ideas that the chines marry for the purpose of continuing the ancestral line. However, the act of marriage is not something to look for because the girls have to marry people that they barely know simply for procreation.
